24th February 2004 is a memorable day in the
history of the 1st Engineer Services Regiment, Army Cantonment,
Panagoda, when the game of chess was introduce for the first time
by the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club of Russian Centre in Colombo.
The one day programme was organised by Major
Pani Kavikeshawa – the Commanding Officer of the 1st Engineer
Services Regiment, under the direction of Colonel Mahinda Ambanpola
USP – the Centre Commandant of the Corps of Engineer Services
and the event was coordinated by Major Sugath Kithulgoda.
The Chess training workshop was efficiently and
effectively conducted by one and only chess Olympiad Gold medallist
in Sri Lanka Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya and the Coordinating officer
Mr. Bandula Withanage. It was the 105th chess Workshop Island wide
held by Anatoly Karpov Chess Club, and 5th for the Army on request.
Mrs. Suneetha demonstrated how the game of chess
is played in such a simple manner the participants practically
all of whom were novices were quick enough to grasp finer points
of the game. Nearly 150 personnel comprising of Officers, Other
Ranks and Civilian tradesman & women who are engaged in the
civil and electrical engineering profession participated in this
exercise. In the morning session both instructors initially introduced
the basic principles and know how the game of chess and within
the latter part of the day participants were able to grasp those
techniques to a great advantage.
Though the programme and training was limited
to one day session, it was highly appreciated and commendable
because it is useful to beginners. Many booklets and handouts
were distributed by Mrs. Suneetha and those will be made use of
to promote the game of chess within the Corps of Engineer Services
